Oscar Delafé is big—huge, really—but limber like an animal. Oscar Delafé gets around on a folding bike and dances like a god. He just doesn’t do things halfway. He had a few ideas ready for his Take Away Show—he even got nine musicians to rehearse for a couple of days beforehand just to be ready to play for us, in a cable car flying over Barcelona. Permission for that? He saw to it. And the rest? Let’s just say he had some surprises ready for us.
It was our last day in town, and everything was in place: Oscar, the beautiful Elena, a trombone player, a sax player, two guitarists, percussionists, colors, smiles and improvisation in every sense of the word. We played in the cable car and lounged about in some kind of woodsy area that we turned into our own little surrealist picnic spot. Then it was time for the surprise.
The fine arts museum was below us, and in front of it were two narrow escalators, one going up and the other down. “We’re just going to take one big loop around,” Oscar told us, “and that should take us just about the length of the song.” And he was right. The song was at the same time highly precise and crazy, the weather was terrific and the big open plaza was ours to play with. Oscar danced, Elena followed and the brass players provided rhythm. At the end he hopped up onto the guardrail, fiddling with his mellotron in the bright sunlight. Perfect.
Oscar Delafé knows exactly what he’s doing.
Shot in Barcelona, Spain
