The three members of the band have participated to the “What’s Hot in the Music scene?” contest on the Black XS Livesound website. Their suggestion? Their Myspace page… we decided to give it a go. Three guitars, two or three voices and an infectious desire to play around, for an unexpected but full of energy Take Away Show.

Ray Dar Vees. Mysterious and androgynous, the band is fairly new but already very much in place. Decinding to brave the shooting bannings and the rain, they stroll about from Covent Garden to Trafalgar Square, also going round St James Park, for a Take Away Show throughout London.

Let’s Wrestle

For the third day of shooting it got very hot in London. Blinding sunlight shone mercilessly on the sidewalks and asphalt of Notting Hill, where we had gathered the boys of Let’s Wrestle into a calm, empty pub equipped with a back courtyard. We had a drink and planned
the shoot under the watchful eyes of the queen, whose portrait looked down at us from the beer mugs, before returning to the bustle of the streets.

Just a pair of calm dudes, Let’s Wrestle. They work in a music store not far from the pub, and one doesn’t really imagine them bouncing around behind the counter, but rather shuffling nonchalantly through the store. Bizarrely (but really?), when they take hold of their guitars in order to play their highly energetic tunes, that nonchalance sticks around.

After having walked for a bit, we found a spot in the middle of the street. At a distance, a moving truck. The two of them settled down like they were at home and launched into “I Won’t Lie to You:” shy, relaxed, calm. Incredibly, not a single car passed by as the camera
twirled around these two little Buddhas of slack-folk, who responded by looking nervously down the road, waiting for a car to come speeding around the corner.

We had to stop only once to let a car leave its parking space. An old dame asked us if we were from the neighborhood. When we explained that we weren’t, she said to get lost (but in words our mothers would appreciate us not printing here). It’s cool. We had what we needed.

Ray Dar Vees

They must have lived barely sixty years between the three of them. Mysterious and androgynous, the band is fairly new but already very much in place. We could tell, however, that the idea of being filmed was stressing them out a bit. The fear of failure, of baring themselves in public, of just letting themselves go and seeing what happens, was getting to them. They’re young, but like a set of grizzled industry veterans, they wanted to control everything. Fortunately for us, they didn’t get to.

They wandered about in the Covent Garden market, receiving amused looks from the vendors packing up for the day, and amused to be there, being told to do English things by some French people. Well, things that French people think English people do. But they were good sports, despite a small case of the nerves.

Deciding to brave the rain, we left the market for Trafalgar Square. We didn’t even get a chance to pull out the camera before a guard told us to bugger off. So we moved on to St. James Park, but the rain redoubled its efforts to foil the shoot. We found ourselves under the trees, ready for a somewhat unpolished but nonetheless enthusiastic rendition of “One Day.”

We then turned off towards the Horse Guard barracks. A bit of a awkward moment followed when the band walked by both sides of the cavalryman on duty, who rather generously but very dutifully moved to the side in order to avoid disrupting the shoot. Alas, it was too good to be true. A sergeant burst onto the scene, and marching purposefully with a baton under his arm, navigated through the shoot and told Thomas firmly and evenly to quit filming and requested that we leave the premises.
